Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a patient came in holding two bottles of over-the-counter pain relievers. She asked, “I have arthritis, and I don’t know if I should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen. What’s the difference, and which one is safer?”
I smiled and explained, “Great question! NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) work by reducing inflammation, which makes them great for arthritis, muscle pain, and swelling. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), on the other hand, doesn’t reduce inflammation but is great for pain relief and fever.”
She nodded. “I’ve also heard about stronger pain medications. When are opioids used?”
“Opioids, like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine, are prescribed for severe pain, such as post-surgical pain or chronic conditions like cancer pain,” I explained. “But they must be used with caution due to the risk of dependency.”
She looked concerned. “Are there side effects I should worry about?”
“Yes,” I said. “NSAIDs can cause stomach irritation, ulcers, or kidney issues with long-term use. Acetaminophen is safe when taken correctly, but high doses can lead to liver damage. Opioids have risks like drowsiness, constipation, and addiction, which is why they are only prescribed when necessary.”
Before she left, I shared a tip. “We also offer compounded pain relief solutions, like topical NSAID creams for joint pain or customized formulations to reduce stomach irritation. If standard medications aren’t working for you, we can create something tailored to your needs.”
She smiled. “I had no idea I had so many options. Thank you for explaining everything.”
At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we’re committed to helping patients find the best pain management strategies—whether it’s NSAIDs, acetaminophen, or customized compounded solutions.
Until tomorrow,
