Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a patient called asking about low-dose naltrexone (LDN). She explained, “My doctor suggested it for managing my autoimmune condition, but I don’t know much about it. How does it work?”

I appreciated her curiosity. “LDN is a unique treatment option for chronic conditions like autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, and even some chronic pain disorders. It’s believed to work by modulating the immune system and reducing inflammation.”

She sounded intrigued. “But isn’t naltrexone usually used for addiction?”

“That’s correct,” I said, “but at low doses—typically between 1.5 mg and 4.5 mg—it has a completely different effect. LDN stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural chemicals in your body that help regulate the immune system and reduce inflammation.”

She then asked, “Are there any side effects I should be aware of?”

“LDN is generally well-tolerated,” I reassured her. “Some people might experience vivid dreams or mild insomnia initially, but these effects usually subside as your body adjusts. It’s also important to take it as directed, usually before bedtime.”

Before she hung up, I added, “We prepare LDN as a compounded medication because it’s not commercially available at these low doses. We’re also building a new lab for hazardous compounding, which will allow us to expand our offerings even further.”

She sounded relieved. “That’s good to know. I feel much more comfortable starting this now.”
