Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, an elderly gentleman came in and asked, “Do I really need the shingles vaccine? I’ve never had chickenpox, so I don’t think it’s necessary.”
I nodded and clarified, “That’s a common misconception. Even if you’re not sure about your chickenpox history, most adults in the U.S. have been exposed to the virus, often without realizing it. Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the same virus—varicella-zoster—later in life.”
He raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “What happens if I get shingles?”
“Shingles can cause a painful rash, typically on one side of the body, but the real concern is postherpetic neuralgia—a lingering nerve pain that can last for months or even years,” I explained. “The shingles vaccine reduces your risk of both the rash and the nerve pain significantly.”
He asked, “What’s the process for getting the vaccine?”
“The shingles vaccine, called Shingrix, is given in two doses a few months apart,” I said. “It’s recommended for adults 50 and older, even if you’ve already had shingles, to prevent another episode.”
Before he left, I added, “We’re also proud to offer onsite vaccine clinics and are expanding our compounding services with a new lab for hazardous compounds. It’s all part of our mission to keep our patients healthy and cared for.”
He smiled and said, “That sounds great. I’ll get started with the first dose soon.”
Educating patients about the importance of vaccinations is a cornerstone of preventive healthcare. Knowing they’re protected gives them peace of mind and a healthier future.
Until tomorrow,
