Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I met with a man who was curious about using GLP-1 medications for weight loss. He said, “I’ve heard that these medications can help with both weight loss and appetite control. How do they work, and are they effective?”

I nodded, glad to explain. “Yes, GLP-1 medications can be very effective for weight loss and controlling appetite. They mimic the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is naturally produced in the body. GLP-1 plays a role in blood sugar regulation, but it also affects appetite and how quickly food is emptied from the stomach.”

He looked interested and asked, “So how does it help with weight loss?”

“GLP-1 medications work by slowing down gastric emptying, which makes you feel full for longer,” I explained. “They also send signals to your brain to reduce appetite, making it easier to eat smaller portions and avoid overeating. By helping you feel satisfied with less food, they can support sustainable weight loss over time.”

He asked about the effectiveness and duration. “How much weight can people typically lose with these medications?”

“On average, studies have shown that people using GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide or liraglutide, can lose around 5-15% of their body weight over several months to a year, especially when combined with a healthy diet and exercise. Individual results vary, but many patients see noticeable changes within a few months.”

He was curious about any potential side effects. “Are there any side effects I should watch out for?”

“The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, particularly when first starting the medication,” I said. “Your healthcare provider will typically start you at a low dose and gradually increase it to minimize these effects. Staying hydrated and eating smaller, more frequent meals can also help.”

Before he left, I added, “If you’re interested, you can speak with your healthcare provider about whether GLP-1 medications are a good fit for you. At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we offer free delivery to make sure you have easy access to your medications.”

He smiled, feeling hopeful. “Thank you! That was really helpful. I’ll talk to my doctor.”

Helping patients understand how GLP-1 medications work for weight loss and appetite control is a vital part of my job. With the right guidance and support, they can achieve their health goals more effectively.

Until tomorrow,
