As the new year approaches, many of us reflect on growth and change, and that’s exactly what I discussed with a mother and her teenage daughter at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy today. The young girl looked a little uncomfortable as her mom said, “My daughter has been noticing a lot of changes in her body, and I think it’s overwhelming for her. Can you help us understand what’s normal during puberty?”

I smiled warmly at the young girl to help her feel at ease. “Absolutely! Puberty is a time of big changes, both physically and emotionally. It can feel like a lot, but it’s all part of growing up. During puberty, your body starts producing more hormones like estrogen and testosterone, which lead to the changes you’re experiencing.”

The girl hesitated before asking, “Like what kind of changes?”

I explained gently, “You might notice growth spurts, where you suddenly get taller, and your emotions might feel more intense. That’s completely normal. You’ll also see changes in your skin, like oiliness or acne, because of those hormone shifts. If acne is a concern, starting a simple skincare routine can make a big difference.”

Her mom added, “What about the emotional side of things? Are there any tips for managing mood swings?”

“Definitely,” I replied. “Staying active is one of the best things you can do. Exercise releases endorphins, which help improve your mood. Getting plenty of sleep is also super important because your body is working hard to grow and adjust. And don’t forget to eat a balanced diet—fruits, vegetables, and whole grains give your body the fuel it needs.”

The young girl seemed to relax a little and asked, “Do these changes last forever?”

I reassured her, “No, they don’t! Most of the physical changes happen over a few years, and your body will adjust as you grow. Emotional ups and downs will also become easier to manage as you get older and more familiar with what’s happening in your body.”

Before they left, I added, “If you need help finding skincare products or other health-related items, Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy is always here to help. Plus, we offer free delivery so you can get what you need from the comfort of your home.”

Her mom smiled and said, “Thank you so much for helping us understand this. It’s a relief to know what to expect.”

As we prepare for a brand-new year, I’m reminded of how important it is to provide support and education to families. Puberty can be a challenging time, but with the right tools and encouragement, teens can navigate these changes with confidence and ease. Let’s make 2025 a year of growth and understanding for everyone!

Until tomorrow,
