Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I met with a concerned mom who was picking up a few items for her teenage son. She sighed and said, “My son’s mood swings are all over the place lately. One moment he’s happy, and the next he’s frustrated or sad. Is this normal during puberty, and is there anything I can do to help him?”
I smiled, understanding her concern. “Yes, mood swings are very common during puberty. This period brings a surge of hormones like testosterone and estrogen, which can impact emotions. Puberty is a time of intense change—physically, mentally, and emotionally. So, mood swings are a normal part of adjusting to all these new experiences.”
She looked relieved but curious. “Is there anything I can do to help him manage these changes?”
“There are a few things that can help,” I explained. “First, it’s important for him to get plenty of sleep. Teens need more rest than we sometimes realize, around 8-10 hours a night, to help their bodies and minds adjust to these changes. Encouraging him to establish a good bedtime routine can make a big difference in how he feels during the day.”
She asked, “What about his diet? Does that play a role?”
“Absolutely,” I replied. “A balanced diet with plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein can help stabilize blood sugar and energy levels, which in turn can reduce mood swings. Avoiding too much caffeine or sugary snacks can also prevent energy crashes that might worsen his mood.”
We also talked about exercise. “Physical activity is a great outlet for teens during this time. Encouraging him to engage in a sport or activity he enjoys can help release stress and improve his mood. Even a short walk or a few minutes of stretching can make a difference.”
She was interested in emotional support as well. “What about talking to him about what he’s going through?”
“Communication is key,” I said. “Letting him know that what he’s experiencing is normal and that he can talk to you about his feelings without judgment can be really comforting. Puberty can feel overwhelming, and knowing he has support at home can ease some of the emotional load.”
Before she left, I reminded her, “If he needs any vitamins or supplements to support his overall health, remember that Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy offers free delivery for added convenience.”
She smiled, looking reassured. “Thank you for the advice. It helps to know what to expect and how I can support him.”
Supporting parents and teens through the challenges of puberty is a rewarding part of my work. With the right tools and understanding, families can navigate this stage with patience and confidence.
Until tomorrow,
