Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a customer came in looking for advice on managing back pain. She asked, “I’ve been dealing with some mild back pain, and my friend recommended ibuprofen. How does it work, and is it safe to take for a few days?”
I nodded, happy to explain. “Yes, ibuprofen is a common over-the-counter option for pain relief and inflammation. It belongs to a group of medications called NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), which work by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. When you have pain from an injury or muscle strain, like back pain, ibuprofen can be really effective in reducing both the pain and the swelling that comes with it.”
She looked relieved but asked, “How long can I take it safely?”
“That’s a great question,” I replied. “Ibuprofen can be taken safely for short-term use, typically up to a week, as long as you follow the dosing instructions. For adults, the usual dose is 200–400 mg every 4–6 hours as needed, but make sure not to exceed the maximum daily limit of 1,200 mg unless advised by your doctor. Taking it with food or milk can help protect your stomach.”
She nodded, but wanted to know about potential side effects. “Are there any risks I should be aware of?”
“Yes, there are a few things to keep in mind,” I said. “Long-term or high-dose use of ibuprofen can irritate the stomach lining and increase the risk of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding. It’s also important to avoid taking ibuprofen if you have certain health conditions, like kidney issues or high blood pressure, without consulting your doctor. It’s best to use ibuprofen only when you need it and to take breaks to avoid prolonged use.”
We also discussed alternative methods for managing back pain. “In addition to ibuprofen, applying a heat or ice pack can help alleviate pain. Stretching gently and using a supportive chair can also prevent further strain on your back. If the pain persists for more than a few days, consider talking to a healthcare provider for further evaluation.”
Before she left, I added, “And remember, if you ever need ibuprofen or other pain relief options, Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy offers free delivery so you don’t have to make an extra trip, especially when you’re in pain.”
She smiled, looking more at ease. “Thank you for all the advice. I’ll take it as needed and see how I feel.”
Helping patients understand how to use OTC medications like ibuprofen safely is an important part of my job. With the right information, patients can manage their pain effectively while minimizing risks.
Until tomorrow,
