Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a young boy and his mom came in, both looking a bit puzzled. His mom said, “My son seems to be growing so quickly! One week his clothes fit, and the next they’re too short. Is this normal during puberty?”
I smiled, knowing this was a common experience for kids going through puberty. “Yes, growth spurts are one of the most noticeable changes during puberty. As kids enter this stage, their bodies start producing more growth hormones, which can lead to rapid changes in height and body shape. It’s completely normal, but I can imagine it’s a bit surprising when it seems to happen overnight!”
The boy looked a bit relieved but had a question of his own. “Why do I feel so clumsy all of a sudden?”
“That’s a great question,” I said, reassuring him. “During a growth spurt, different parts of your body can grow at different rates. For example, your legs might grow quickly while your muscles are still catching up. This can make you feel a little uncoordinated or clumsy, but don’t worry—it’s only temporary. As your muscles adjust to your new height, your balance and coordination will improve.”
His mom asked, “Is there anything we should be doing to support his growth?”
“Yes! Eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein, calcium, and vitamins is essential,” I explained. “Protein helps build muscle, calcium supports bone growth, and vitamins like vitamin D are important for overall health. And don’t forget about sleep! Growth hormone is primarily released during sleep, so getting enough rest is key for healthy growth.”
We also talked about managing the discomfort that sometimes comes with growth spurts. “Some kids experience mild growing pains, especially in their legs. Gentle stretching, a warm bath, or a heating pad can help relieve any discomfort. If the pains are more severe, you might want to check in with a doctor.”
The boy looked at his mom, a bit more at ease. “So, this is all normal, and it won’t last forever?”
“Exactly!” I said with a smile. “Everyone goes through growth spurts at their own pace, but it’s a sign that your body is growing and developing as it should. Before you know it, you’ll have settled into your new height and size, and the clumsiness will be a thing of the past.”
Before they left, I reminded them, “And if you need any vitamins or supplements, Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy offers free delivery so you can get what you need without making an extra trip. We’re always here to support your health journey!”
Helping young people and their families navigate the changes of puberty, like growth spurts, is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. With a bit of patience and the right support, these changes become milestones in the journey of growing up.
Until tomorrow,
