Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a young boy came in with his mom, looking a bit embarrassed. His mom said, “My son has been noticing that he’s starting to smell differently, especially after sports or a long day. I think he’s feeling self-conscious about it. Could you explain why this is happening and what we can do?”
I smiled, understanding the boy’s discomfort. “Absolutely, body odor is completely normal and is one of the changes that happen during puberty. As your body starts to produce more hormones, your sweat glands become more active, especially the glands in areas like your underarms. The sweat produced by these glands interacts with bacteria on your skin, which can cause a stronger smell.”
The boy looked a bit more relieved and asked, “So, it’s normal? I’m not the only one?”
“Not at all! Almost everyone experiences this change during puberty,” I reassured him. “And the good news is, there are simple things you can do to manage it. One of the best ways is to establish a good hygiene routine. Make sure to shower daily, especially after exercise or sports, and focus on washing areas where sweat accumulates, like your underarms.”
He nodded, starting to feel more comfortable with the idea. “What about deodorant? Do I need to start using that?”
“Yes, using deodorant or an antiperspirant can really help,” I explained. “Deodorants help mask odor, while antiperspirants actually reduce the amount of sweat. You can find deodorants that are designed for younger skin, and some of them are very gentle. Applying it every morning can help you feel fresh throughout the day.”
His mom asked, “Are there any specific ingredients we should look for or avoid?”
“If he has sensitive skin, you might want to look for aluminum-free deodorants or those labeled as hypoallergenic. There are also natural deodorants with ingredients like baking soda and tea tree oil that are gentle on the skin but effective at neutralizing odor,” I said. “And remember, it’s always a good idea to test a small amount on the skin first to make sure there’s no irritation.”
We also discussed the importance of clean clothing. “Make sure to wear clean clothes every day, especially shirts and socks. Fresh clothes can make a big difference in managing odor.”
Before they left, I mentioned that if he ever needed any products, Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy offers free delivery on deodorants and hygiene products, so they wouldn’t have to worry about running out.
The boy looked much more relaxed, and his mom smiled. “Thank you for making him feel comfortable. I think he’s ready to start a new routine!”
Helping kids and parents navigate the changes of puberty—like body odor—is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. With the right knowledge and tools, teens can feel confident and comfortable during this time of growth.
Until tomorrow,
