Daily Diary – Day 154: Understanding Perimenopause – What Women in Their 40s Should Know

Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had a conversation with a woman in her early 40s who seemed a bit confused and concerned. She said, “I’ve been feeling different lately—my periods are irregular, I’m getting hot flashes, and I feel moody all the time. I’m not sure what’s going on. Could it be perimenopause?”

I nodded, understanding her concerns. “Yes, it sounds like you may be experiencing perimenopause, which is the transitional phase leading up to menopause. During perimenopause, your hormone levels, especially estrogen, start fluctuating, and this can cause a range of symptoms like hot flashes, irregular periods, mood swings, and even sleep disturbances.”

She sighed with relief. “So, it’s normal to feel all over the place?”

“Absolutely,” I reassured her. “Many women experience a variety of symptoms during this time, and each woman’s experience is unique. Some have mild symptoms, while others find it more challenging. Perimenopause can start as early as your late 30s or early 40s, and it typically lasts until menopause, which is when you haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months.”

She looked thoughtful and asked, “Are there ways to manage these symptoms, or do I just have to wait it out?”

“Fortunately, there are several ways to help manage perimenopausal symptoms,” I explained. “For hot flashes and night sweats, try dressing in layers, using a fan, or keeping your room cool at night. For mood swings and anxiety, regular exercise and mindfulness practices like yoga or meditation can help. Also, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can support your overall well-being.”

We also talked about supplements that might help. “Calcium and vitamin D are essential for bone health, as women are more prone to bone loss during this time. Magnesium can help with mood regulation and improve sleep, and B vitamins can support energy levels.”

She seemed interested in exploring more options. “What about hormone therapy? I’ve heard it can be helpful.”

“At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we do offer compounding services for customized hormone therapies, and we’re currently working on setting up a hazardous compounding room to provide even more personalized options in the future,” I said. “Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can be effective for managing symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings, but it’s important to discuss this with your healthcare provider to see if it’s the right choice for you.”

Before she left, I reminded her, “If you ever need any supplements or medications, we offer free delivery. You don’t have to worry about picking things up if you’re feeling off.”

She smiled, clearly feeling more at ease. “Thank you for explaining everything. I feel so much better knowing what’s going on and what I can do to manage it.”

Helping women navigate perimenopause is a rewarding part of my work. It’s a natural phase of life, and with the right information and support, women can feel empowered to manage their health and well-being during this time.

Until tomorrow,
