Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a concerned mother and her teenage daughter visited, discussing the emotional ups and downs the daughter has been experiencing lately. The mother expressed, “She seems to be on a rollercoaster of emotions. Is this normal during puberty?”

I reassured them both, “Absolutely, mood swings are very typical during puberty due to hormonal changes. During this time, the body increases production of hormones like estrogen and testosterone, which can significantly impact emotions. It’s like your body’s chemistry is adjusting to new levels, which can make feelings seem more intense.”

The daughter asked, “So, what can I do to feel better?”

“It’s important to have healthy outlets for your emotions,” I advised. “Regular physical activity, enough sleep, and a balanced diet can all help stabilize your mood. Activities like yoga or even journaling can also provide emotional relief. And remember, it’s okay to talk about how you’re feeling with friends, family, or a counselor.”

We discussed strategies for managing stress, such as deep breathing techniques and mindfulness exercises, which can be particularly effective during emotional moments.

Before they left, I reminded them, “If these feelings become overwhelming or hard to manage, it may be helpful to speak with a professional who can provide additional support. And as always, we’re here to help with any health-related questions you might have.”

Helping families understand the complexities of emotional health during puberty is a vital part of what we do at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy.

Until tomorrow, Rania – Your Friendly Pharmacist at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy
