Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had a conversation with a young boy and his father, both looking a bit awkward but curious. The father cleared his throat and said, “My son has some questions about changes he’s going through, like erections and wet dreams. He’s a bit embarrassed, and we thought you could help explain what’s happening.”

I smiled reassuringly, understanding the sensitivity of the topic. “Of course, I’m happy to help explain. During puberty, boys go through many changes, and experiencing erections and wet dreams are perfectly normal parts of this process. Let’s start with erections. These occur when the penis becomes stiff and enlarged. This can happen because of sexual thoughts or feelings, but it can also happen without any particular reason, even while sleeping.”

The boy looked relieved to hear this was normal. I continued, “As for wet dreams, they’re also called nocturnal emissions. This happens when you ejaculate during your sleep. It’s another normal part of growing up and happens to many boys during puberty. It’s your body’s way of practicing for adult reproductive functions. Both erections and wet dreams are signs that your body is developing just as it should.”

The father nodded, asking, “Is there anything he should do about them?”

“There’s nothing specific you need to do,” I reassured them. “It’s important to understand that these are natural processes. However, maintaining good hygiene is important, especially after a wet dream. It might also be helpful to discuss these changes openly, as understanding them can reduce any anxiety or embarrassment.”

The boy seemed curious and a bit more comfortable now, so I added, “And remember, everyone goes through these changes at their own pace during puberty. You might notice your friends experiencing these changes sooner or later than you, and that’s perfectly okay.”

We also touched on the importance of accurate information. “There are a lot of myths and misinformation about sexual health and puberty. If you have questions, it’s great to ask a trusted adult or health professional rather than relying on hearsay or online forums.”

Before they left, I reminded them, “If you ever have more questions or need advice, feel free to come back. We’re here to help you through all stages of your health and development.”

The father thanked me, and the boy smiled, both looking more at ease as they left.

It’s always rewarding to help young people and their families navigate the complexities of puberty with confidence and accurate information.

Until tomorrow,
