Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had a conversation with a patient who was curious about using medication for weight loss. She said, “I’ve been hearing about these GLP-1 medications for weight loss, but I don’t really understand how they work. Can you explain it to me?”
I was happy to dive into the topic, as GLP-1 receptor agonists are an exciting development in weight management. “Absolutely! GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, which is a hormone that’s naturally produced in your body. It plays an important role in regulating your appetite and blood sugar levels. The GLP-1 medications used for weight loss mimic this hormone, helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing the amount of food you eat.”
She looked intrigued but wanted to know more. “So, it just helps you eat less? Does it speed up your metabolism too?”
“Not exactly,” I explained. “While GLP-1 medications don’t directly speed up your metabolism, they help by slowing down the emptying of your stomach, which keeps you feeling full after eating smaller portions. This helps to naturally reduce your overall calorie intake, leading to weight loss over time. Additionally, these medications help your body respond better to insulin, which can also support fat loss, especially if you have issues with insulin resistance.”
She nodded, seeming to understand. “How quickly do you see results, and is it safe to use for long-term weight management?”
“Results can vary, but many people start seeing weight loss within the first few weeks of using a GLP-1 medication,” I said. “On average, patients can lose about 5-10% of their body weight over 6 months to a year, depending on their individual response and lifestyle changes. As for safety, these medications are generally considered safe for long-term use under a healthcare provider’s supervision. Your doctor will monitor you for any side effects and adjust the dosage as needed.”
We also discussed some common side effects. “The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, especially when you first start the medication,” I noted. “But these symptoms usually improve as your body gets used to the treatment. Starting with a lower dose and gradually increasing it can help minimize these side effects.”
Before she left, I added, “And remember, if you’re interested in starting a GLP-1 medication, you’ll need to discuss it with your healthcare provider to see if it’s the right fit for you. If you do start on one, we offer free delivery for all medications at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy. We’re also developing a hazardous compounding room, which will allow us to offer custom-compounded solutions in the future.”
She smiled and said, “Thanks so much for explaining everything. I’ll definitely talk to my doctor about it.”
Conversations like this remind me of the importance of educating patients about their options when it comes to weight loss and overall health. GLP-1 medications are a promising tool for helping people achieve their weight loss goals, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle.
