Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I spoke with a man in his early 50s who looked exhausted. He approached me with a weary smile and said, “I’ve been feeling really drained lately. I used to have so much energy, but now I just feel tired all the time. I’m not sure what’s changed—what can I do to boost my energy without relying on caffeine or energy drinks?”

I could sense his frustration, and I knew this was a common issue for many men as they age. “Feeling low on energy is a normal part of aging,” I began. “As you get older, your metabolism slows down, and your body doesn’t produce as much testosterone or growth hormone, which are key for maintaining energy and muscle mass. But there are several natural ways to boost your energy levels and help you feel more like yourself again.”

He looked hopeful and asked, “What do you suggest?”

“The first thing I’d recommend is taking a close look at your diet,” I said. “A balanced diet rich in lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats can help fuel your body throughout the day. Foods like salmon, nuts, and avocados are great for providing long-lasting energy without causing spikes and crashes. You’ll also want to stay hydrated—dehydration is one of the most common causes of fatigue.”

He nodded, taking mental notes. “That makes sense. What about exercise? I’ve been slacking off lately.”

“That could be part of the problem,” I agreed. “Even though it might feel counterintuitive, regular exercise is one of the best ways to improve your energy levels. Strength training and cardio can help increase your stamina and boost testosterone production. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week—whether it’s walking, swimming, or lifting weights.”

He seemed more optimistic but had another question. “I’ve been hearing a lot about supplements for energy. Are there any that actually work?”

“Great question,” I said. “There are several supplements that can support energy levels naturally. Magnesium is one of them—many people don’t get enough of it, and it plays a big role in energy production. Vitamin D is also important, especially if you’re not getting enough sunlight. Low vitamin D levels can lead to fatigue. B vitamins—particularly B12—help with energy metabolism, so they’re worth considering too.”

We also touched on the importance of sleep. “How much sleep are you getting?” I asked.

“Not enough,” he admitted. “I stay up late working and then have to get up early for meetings.”

“That could be contributing to the problem,” I said. “As we get older, our bodies don’t recover from poor sleep the way they used to. Try to aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, and establish a regular bedtime routine. This will help your body recharge and give you more consistent energy throughout the day.”

Before he left, I reminded him, “And if you need any supplements, we offer free delivery at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy. We’re also working on developing a hazardous compounding room, which will allow us to offer personalized solutions like Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) in the future. TRT can be an option if low testosterone is contributing to your fatigue, but you’ll want to talk to your healthcare provider about whether it’s right for you.”

He smiled and said, “Thanks, this gives me a good place to start. I’ll definitely make some changes and see how it goes.”

It’s always rewarding to help patients take steps toward feeling better naturally, especially when it comes to managing energy levels as they age. With the right combination of diet, exercise, and supplements, it’s possible to regain energy and feel more like yourself again.

Until tomorrow,
