Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had a thoughtful conversation with a man in his early 50s. He came to me with a worried expression and said, “I just turned 50, and I’ve been hearing that men my age need to start paying more attention to their health. I feel fine right now, but what should I be looking out for? Are there any specific health issues I should know about?”
I could sense his concern and was glad he was being proactive. “Yes, once you reach your 50s, there are a few common health issues that can arise, but the good news is there are plenty of ways to prevent or manage them. The key is staying informed and on top of your health.”
He looked relieved but wanted more details. “What kinds of health problems should I be worried about?”
I started by discussing cardiovascular health. “Heart disease is one of the most common health concerns for men in their 50s. It’s important to monitor your cholesterol levels and blood pressure to reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes. If your cholesterol or blood pressure is high, your healthcare provider may recommend medications or lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise, to bring them down.”
He nodded, listening intently. “I’ve been trying to stay active, but what else can I do?”
“That’s great! Regular exercise, like brisk walking, swimming, or strength training, is one of the best things you can do,” I said. “But equally important is your diet. Focus on eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats like those found in nuts and fish. Reducing your intake of sodium and processed foods can also help lower blood pressure and improve overall heart health.”
He then asked, “What about things like prostate health? I’ve heard that’s a big issue for men my age.”
“That’s true,” I confirmed. “Once you hit your 50s, it’s common for the prostate to enlarge, which can lead to issues like benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Symptoms might include difficulty urinating or needing to go frequently at night. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider if you notice any of these symptoms because there are medications that can help. And don’t forget about regular prostate exams or PSA screenings—they’re key for catching any potential problems early.”
He seemed a bit more relaxed but still had a few more questions. “What about energy? I feel like I’m slowing down, and I’ve heard that testosterone levels drop at my age. Should I be worried about that?”
“That’s another common concern,” I said. “Yes, testosterone levels naturally decline as men age, usually starting in their 40s and continuing into their 50s and beyond. Low testosterone can cause symptoms like fatigue, reduced muscle mass, and a decrease in sex drive. If you’re feeling more tired or less motivated, it’s worth having your testosterone levels checked by your healthcare provider. If they’re low, your doctor might suggest lifestyle changes or even Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) to help balance things out.”
He seemed more at ease, knowing there were options. “Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for?”
“One other important thing to consider is diabetes, especially if you have a family history or if you’re overweight,” I explained. “Your healthcare provider can test your blood glucose levels to check for prediabetes or diabetes. Keeping your weight in check and eating a healthy diet can help reduce your risk.”
Before he left, I added, “And remember, at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we offer free delivery for any medications or supplements you might need. We also provide compounding services, so if you ever need personalized medication—like a custom hormone treatment—we’ve got you covered. In fact, we’re working on developing a hazardous compounding room so we can compound testosterone replacement therapy in the near future.”
He smiled and said, “That’s great to know! I feel a lot more prepared now. Thanks for the advice—I’m going to stay on top of this and talk to my doctor.”
It’s always rewarding to help patients like him understand the importance of preventive care, especially as they enter a new stage of life. Men’s health in their 50s can be managed effectively with the right knowledge and a proactive approach, and I’m proud that Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy is here to support our patients every step of the way.
Until tomorrow,
