Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a middle-aged woman came in, looking tired and congested. She approached me and said, “I’ve been dealing with this awful cold for days now, and it’s keeping me up at night. I’ve been coughing, and my head feels heavy. I saw NyQuil on the shelf—do you think that would help me get some sleep?”

I could tell she was in need of some much-needed rest and relief from her cold symptoms. “NyQuil is a great option for nighttime cold and flu relief,” I reassured her. “It’s designed specifically to help relieve symptoms like coughing, congestion, sore throat, and body aches, so you can rest better at night.”

She seemed relieved but had some questions. “How does it work? I don’t want to take something that will make me feel groggy the next day.”

“That’s the great thing about NyQuil,” I explained. “It’s formulated with acetaminophen to reduce fever and pain, dextromethorphan to suppress coughing, and doxylamine, an antihistamine, to help you sleep by reducing sneezing and a runny nose. The doxylamine is what helps you sleep, but since you’re taking it at night, it won’t interfere with your day. It’s designed to give you a restful night’s sleep without leaving you groggy the next morning.”

She nodded, starting to feel more confident. “That sounds perfect. How often should I take it?”

NyQuil works for about 6 to 8 hours, so you’ll only need to take it once before bed,” I explained. “Just make sure to follow the dosage instructions on the package, and avoid taking it with other medications that contain acetaminophen, since NyQuil already includes it.”

She seemed satisfied with the information, but still had one more question. “What about side effects? Are there any I should be worried about?”

I smiled and reassured her. “Most people tolerate NyQuil very well. Some might feel a bit drowsy or experience dry mouth, but that’s expected since it’s helping you sleep. Just make sure you’re not driving or doing anything that requires focus after taking it. And if your symptoms persist for more than a week or worsen, it’s always a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider.”

Before she left, I added, “And remember, if you’re feeling too sick to come back to the pharmacy, we offer free delivery at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy. So, if you need a refill or any other cold and flu products, we can bring them right to your door.”

Her eyes lit up. “That’s really convenient! I’ll give NyQuil a try tonight and hopefully get a good night’s sleep.”

It’s these kinds of interactions that remind me of the importance of helping patients feel comfortable with their treatment choices, especially when they’re under the weather. Whether it’s relief from a cold or managing symptoms through the night, I’m glad to be part of a pharmacy that offers not just medications, but personalized advice and convenient services like free delivery and compounding if needed.

Until tomorrow,
