Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had a conversation with a woman who seemed a bit anxious as she walked up to the counter. She said, “I just turned 40, and my doctor told me it’s time to start getting mammograms. I’ve never had one before, and honestly, I’m a little nervous. Is it really necessary at my age?”
Her concerns were completely valid, and I was glad she brought it up. “Yes, mammograms are very important for women starting in their 40s,” I reassured her. “It’s completely normal to feel nervous, especially if you’ve never had one before. But they are one of the best tools for early detection of breast cancer, which becomes more common as we age.”
She still looked a bit unsure, so I continued. “Here’s how it works: A mammogram is an X-ray of your breast tissue. It’s designed to detect any changes or abnormalities that might not be noticeable through self-exams or physical exams. The earlier something is detected, the easier it is to treat. So, starting in your 40s, regular mammograms are recommended to catch any potential issues early.”
She nodded, starting to understand. “I see. But how often do I need to get one? Is it every year?”
“Typically, most healthcare providers recommend a mammogram every 1 to 2 years starting at age 40,” I explained. “However, if you have family history or risk factors for breast cancer, your doctor might suggest getting them more frequently. It’s important to talk to your healthcare provider about your personal risk and what screening schedule is right for you.”
She seemed relieved but asked, “Does it hurt? I’ve heard it can be uncomfortable.”
“That’s a common concern,” I replied. “The procedure itself usually takes about 20 minutes, and yes, it can be a little uncomfortable because the breast tissue is compressed to get a clear image. But the discomfort is usually brief, and most women find it tolerable. Plus, the benefit of early detection far outweighs the brief discomfort.”
We also discussed the importance of self-breast exams and staying aware of any changes in her breasts between mammograms. “In addition to getting regular mammograms, it’s good to be familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel, so you can alert your doctor if you notice any changes like lumps, dimpling, or nipple discharge.”
She thanked me for the advice but asked, “If they find something, does it always mean it’s cancer?”
“Not at all,” I reassured her. “In fact, most mammogram findings are benign or non-cancerous. If they find something unusual, they may ask you to come back for more tests, like an ultrasound or a biopsy, to determine what it is. But the key is catching any changes early so they can be treated effectively.”
Before she left, I added, “And remember, if you ever need medications or supplements after any health screenings, Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy offers free delivery to make things easier for you. We’re also working on developing a hazardous compounding room, which will allow us to offer custom-compounded hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in the near future.”
She smiled and said, “Thank you so much! I feel a lot more informed and less nervous now. I’ll definitely make that mammogram appointment.”
It’s these conversations that remind me how important it is to support women as they navigate these health milestones. Mammograms are a crucial part of preventive care, and I’m glad to be able to offer personalized support and advice to help women feel empowered and informed about their health.
Until tomorrow,
