Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had a thoughtful conversation with a man in his early 40s. He approached the counter and said, “I’ve been feeling pretty good overall, but I keep hearing that once you hit your 40s, it’s time to start getting serious about health checkups. What screenings should I be thinking about?”
I smiled, glad to see someone taking charge of their health. “You’re absolutely right. Turning 40 is a great time to start focusing on preventive care. There are a few key health screenings that are especially important for men at this age to help catch any potential issues early. Let’s walk through them.”
His eyes widened with curiosity. “Sure! I’ve never been one to go to the doctor often, but I figure now’s the time to start being proactive.”
“That’s a great mindset to have,” I said. “First on the list is a cholesterol screening. As you enter your 40s, your risk of heart disease increases, so it’s important to keep an eye on your cholesterol levels. If they’re too high, lifestyle changes or medications may be needed to bring them down, and you’ll want to work with your healthcare provider on that.”
He nodded, taking it all in. “That makes sense. What else should I be keeping an eye on?”
“Blood pressure checks are another must,” I continued. “High blood pressure is known as the ‘silent killer’ because it often doesn’t have noticeable symptoms. Checking your blood pressure regularly can help ensure it stays within a healthy range.”
He seemed a little concerned. “Yeah, I’ve heard that can be a big deal. What about prostate health? I’ve heard a lot of talk about that too.”
“Great question,” I said. “Starting in your 40s, you should talk to your doctor about getting a prostate exam or PSA (prostate-specific antigen) blood test. Prostate health is critical for men as they age, and early detection is key to catching any issues before they become serious.”
He smiled, clearly appreciative of the information. “What about my energy levels? I’ve heard guys my age talking about low testosterone.”
“I’m glad you brought that up,” I said. “Testosterone levels can start to decline in your 40s, and it’s a good idea to have your levels checked if you’re feeling fatigued, noticing a drop in libido, or experiencing mood changes. At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we’re actually working on developing a hazardous compounding room so that in the near future, we’ll be able to offer custom-compounded hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for men. Of course, you’ll want to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider to see if HRT is right for you.”
He seemed impressed by the range of services we offer. “That’s awesome. So, is there anything else I should be doing now that I’m in my 40s?”
“Yes, there are a couple more screenings to think about,” I said. “Blood glucose tests can help catch early signs of diabetes, especially if you have a family history. And lastly, don’t forget about colon cancer screening. While this is typically recommended around age 50, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor about when you should start, especially if you have risk factors.”
He thanked me for the advice, clearly feeling more confident about the next steps in his healthcare journey. “This was really helpful. I’ll make sure to check with my provider and get on top of these screenings.”
Before he left, I reminded him, “And don’t forget, at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we offer free delivery for any medications or supplements you might need after your screenings. Plus, we provide compounding services to create personalized treatments, and we’re excited to offer HRT in the near future once our compounding room is complete.”
He smiled and said, “That’s really convenient! Thanks again for all the info—I feel a lot more prepared now.”
It’s conversations like these that remind me how important it is to educate and guide patients through their healthcare journeys. Preventive care is key, and I’m proud that Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy can offer personalized support through free delivery and compounding services.
Until tomorrow,
