Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had a meaningful conversation with a woman in her mid-40s. She approached me looking frustrated and said, “I’ve always managed to keep my weight in check, but recently, no matter what I do, I keep gaining weight. I’m 45 and in perimenopause—could that be the reason? Is there anything I can do?”
I could sense her frustration, and I knew exactly how common this issue is for women in their 40s. “Yes, weight gain during perimenopause is very common,” I explained. “As your hormones—particularly estrogen—start to fluctuate, it can affect your metabolism and how your body stores fat. Many women notice that they gain weight, especially around the abdomen, during this time.”
She nodded, clearly relieved to hear that she wasn’t alone, but she still had questions. “Is there anything I can do to stop it, or is it just something I have to accept?”
“That’s a great question,” I said. “While hormonal changes do make it harder to maintain weight, there are definitely things you can do to manage it. Focusing on a healthy diet that’s rich in fiber, lean proteins, and healthy fats is key. Cutting back on refined sugars and processed carbs can also help prevent those extra pounds from piling on.”
She seemed intrigued but still wanted more details. “What about exercise? I used to be able to maintain my weight with walking a few times a week, but now that doesn’t seem to cut it.”
“Exercise is a huge part of the equation,” I explained. “During perimenopause, strength training becomes especially important. Building muscle mass helps boost your metabolism, which can slow down as you age. Incorporating resistance exercises like weight lifting or bodyweight exercises, combined with cardio like walking, swimming, or cycling, can really help.”
She smiled, but still looked a bit uncertain. “It sounds like I’ll have to change my whole routine. What about supplements or medications?”
“I’m glad you asked,” I said. “At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we offer a range of supplements that can support metabolism and help balance hormones. For example, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D are great for overall health, and magnesium can help manage cravings and boost energy. Additionally, we’re working on developing a hazardous compounding room so that we can offer compounded hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in the near future. This will provide customized hormone support to help manage weight and other perimenopausal symptoms.”
Her eyes lit up. “That sounds like exactly what I need! And can I get everything delivered?”
“Absolutely!” I replied. “We offer free delivery for all your medication and supplement needs, so you don’t have to worry about coming in for every refill.”
As she prepared to leave, she thanked me and said, “I’m feeling a lot more hopeful now. I’ll definitely start with some strength training and look into the supplements.”
It’s conversations like these that remind me how important it is to support women through life’s changes. Perimenopause doesn’t have to mean giving up on feeling your best—there are ways to manage the changes, and I’m here to help guide that journey.
Until tomorrow,
