Hello Diary,
Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a mother came in with her son, who looked like he had been battling a lingering cough for days. She approached me and said, “My son’s had this dry, hacking cough that keeps him up at night. I’ve tried a few things, but nothing seems to work. I saw Robitussin on the shelf—would that be a good option?”
I gave her a reassuring smile. “Yes, Robitussin is a great option for a dry, persistent cough. It comes in a few different formulas, but for a dry, hacking cough, you’d want to go for Robitussin DM, which has two main active ingredients: dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant, and guaifenesin, an expectorant. The dextromethorphan will help quiet that dry, nagging cough, while the guaifenesin will loosen any mucus that might be starting to build up.”
She seemed curious and asked, “How soon does it start working? And will it help him sleep?”
“Robitussin DM usually kicks in within 30 minutes to an hour,” I explained. “It’ll suppress the cough, so he’ll have a better chance at getting a good night’s sleep. And since it’s non-drowsy, he can also use it during the day if needed.”
She looked relieved but asked, “Is there anything I should watch out for? He’s been a little sensitive to medications in the past.”
“That’s a good question,” I said. “Robitussin is generally very well tolerated, but sometimes people can experience side effects like dizziness, nausea, or mild drowsiness. Just be sure to follow the dosing instructions carefully. And if he’s taking any other medications—especially for allergies or colds—double-check the labels to make sure you’re not giving him too much of the same ingredient.”
We also discussed other tips for managing a cough, like keeping his room humidified, using honey (for children over the age of 1), and encouraging him to drink plenty of fluids to help keep his throat moist.
She thanked me for the advice and said, “I’m so glad we came in! I feel much better about trying Robitussin now.”
It was one of those moments where I could help ease a parent’s worries while giving them the tools to care for their child—one of the best parts of being a pharmacist.
