BLT FORMULAS / RECIPES

Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy offers BLT cream based on plasticized gel or hydrophilic cream. Different formulations of BLT cream are available and commonly used in cosmetic treatments. The main difference in the formulation of Benzocaine, Lidocaine, Tetracaine (BLT) cream is the percentage of Lidocaine. But there is one formulation in which the Benzocaine compound is not included in the cream.

Although the specific combination of ingredients may vary, these products often include a mixture of:

Benzocaine

Benzocaine is a common anesthetic used in medicines that work by obstructing sodium channel to the membrane of neurons. It is well tolerated and provides rapid effects.

Lidocaine

Lidocaine is used as a topical anesthetic and was discovered in the 1940s. The function of Lidocaine is to hinder the sodium channel that inhibits the transmission of neuron signals to the brain. Lidocaine can produce a numbing effect within 4 minutes when apply directly to the skin.

Tetracaine

Tetracaine is a popular anesthetic compound because alters the functions of ryanodine receptors that can manage the release of calcium ions. It is a long-acting compound and is effectively used in cosmetic treatments. It may take a long time to initiate the numbing effect compared with Benzocaine and Lidocaine compounds.

How to apply BLT cream?

1. Before applying BLT cream, clean the area of the skin and dry it with a towel.

2. Generally, it is best to use 1g of cream on a 10cm area. If you need to apply the BLT cream to a large area, it is better to anesthetize the area in small sections. This is helpful to reduce systemic absorption of anesthetic ingredients. To anesthetize the large area, you can also break the treatment into several sessions to reduce the levels of anesthetic compounds in the body.

3. You can apply the BLT cream 20 to 30 minutes before the treatment. For that, you should use an applicator to prevent the contact of cream with your hands. You have to massage the area to be treated.

4. Now check the patient for numbness and side effects. If your patient informs you that the area of the skin is not significantly numb, leave the cream for an additional 10 to 15 minutes for numbing effects.

5. After that, remove the cream and clean the skin carefully. You should ensure that there is no leftover cream present on the patient’s skin.

What is the mechanism of action of BLT cream?

The mechanism of action of BLT cream is that the compounds Benzocaine, Lidocaine, and Tetracaine can cause reversible obstruction of nerves. Basically, these compounds are locally anesthetized that reduce the permeability of nerve membranes to sodium. It reduces the rate of depolarization of membranes and increases the threshold for electrical excitability. It can cause loss of functions of pain, touch, temperature, and skeletal muscle tone. It is an effective way to topically apply the BLT cream to the area that you want to be anesthetized. The cream can penetrate the skin and affect the nerve membran

Safety Considerations for BLT cream:

Most dermatologists and aestheticians use Benzocaine, Lidocaine, Tetracaine (BLT) cream appropriately. Some people are not aware of the side effects of the anesthetic cream if a large amount of BLT applies to the skin. When you are using BLT cream on the skin, you should keep in mind the following points.

Do you deliver to my home?

Absolutely, we, at Doctor’s choice pharmacy offer a free delivery to all upland city, Rancho Cucumango , Ontario, San Bernardino , Riverside, Corona, high land and Redland, Free Shipping as well to any area

Apply on Intact skin:

BLT cream can be used on intact skin. When cracks are present on the skin, they can penetrate deeper into the skin. In some procedures, the absorption of BLT cream can be effective. But it also enhances systemic levels of BLT which can lead to toxicity. Therefore, it may be harmful to apply BLT cream to broken skin.

·

Avoid occlusion:

It is important not to occlude the skin, otherwise, it can elevate the level of anesthetics in the blood.

A small application of BLT cream on the skin:

If it is necessary to treat a large area of the skin, then you should split the treatment into multiple sessions to avoid systemic toxicity of BLT cream. You can also apply BLT cream on the areas that are very sensitive and avoid those areas that are less sensitive.

Avoid contact with eyes:

You should always avoid BLT cream contact with your eyes. Otherwise, it can cause severe irritation. So, it is important to wash your hands right after contact with BLT cream.

· Warning signs of toxicity of anesthetics:

The warning signs of anesthetic toxicity are numbness of mouth, lips, and tongue, headache, slurred speech, anxiety, tinnitus, restlessness, and metallic taste. If a patient is experienced any of these signs, you should immediately remove BLT cream. It also needs an effective measure to manage the overdose of anesthetics.

·Risk of methemoglobinemia:

Methemoglobinemia is a known condition that occurs due to topical anesthetics. Infants under twelve months are more prone to develop methemoglobinemia. The signs and symptoms of methemoglobinemia are brown, bluish skin color, or abnormal skin discoloration. Patients may experience this condition immediately and a few hours after use of the topical BLT.

Avoid the use of Benzoyl Peroxide:

Benzoyl peroxide can react with topical anesthetics like Benzocaine, Lidocaine, and Tetracaine (BLT) cream. Benzoyl peroxide can reduce the numbing effect of topical BLT cream. It is compulsory to wash the skin before the application of BLT cream.

·Additive effect of BLT cream:

When a topical anesthetic like BLT cream uses with a combination of other over-the-counter anesthetics or infiltration anesthetics, it may enhance the systemic toxicity.

·Wear gloves:

It is important to wear gloves to avoid anesthetic effects and they can be effective for hygiene purposes. So, you can prevent numbing of your hands by wearing gloves.

Effectiveness of BLT cream

There are several studies in which the testing of topical anesthetics has done through painful stimuli such as prick tests. Additionally, it may be better to check the effectiveness of BLT cream by using a laser. The disadvantage of using topical anesthetics is that it may take some time to produce numbing effects. If it is applied on a large area of the skin, it is dangerous because it takes long occlusion times.

There are several over-the-counter numbing products present in the market ALLof them have low % than the Compounded one . But no cream contains combined forms of benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine. There are some medical conditions in which a patient needs a topical numbing cream instead of anesthetics through needles. Moreover, patients are afraid of using needles on sensitive areas of their skin because it causes pain and discomfort. So, BLT cream is best to apply to sensitive areas before treatment.

Topical anesthetics including BLT cream are not produced a numbing effect on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The reason is that topical anesthetics do not penetrate properly from the skin of palms and soles. Topical anesthetics should only apply to the skin and not to the mucous membrane. When topical anesthetic is used on the mucous membranes for numbing effect, it enhances the penetration of anesthetic ingredients that lead to systemic toxicity. Some topical anesthetics are specially developed to apply to the oral mucosa.

Always remember that there is a risk of systemic absorption with all kinds of topical anesthetics. It is necessary to avoid topical anesthetics like BLT cream on the large area of the

skin. For instance, do not apply topical anesthetics on the entire leg before laser hair removal. So, you should apply it in small sections. If there is a need for the application of topical anesthetics like benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine cream, you can use it on a small area and treat it. Moreover, when topical cream is used in combination with injectables, the systematic effect of anesthetic ingredients increases.
