Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had an interesting chat with a patient who stopped by holding a prescription for Minoxidil capsules. She said,
“Wait, I thought Minoxidil was a foam or topical solution for hair—why am I getting it as a pill?”

I smiled and said, “Great observation! Most people only know about topical Minoxidil, like the ones used for male or female pattern baldness. But there’s growing use of low-dose oral Minoxidil for hair thinning and alopecia, especially when topicals aren’t working or are too irritating.”

She looked surprised. “So the pill works the same?”

“Pretty much—though it actually may work even better in some patients,” I explained. “Minoxidil was originally a blood pressure medication, but in low doses, it helps stimulate hair follicles, increase blood flow to the scalp, and promote stronger, thicker hair growth—without the mess of topical solutions.”

She asked, “Why compound it? Isn’t it available as a regular tablet?”

“Oral Minoxidil exists in higher doses for blood pressure,” I said, “but your doctor prescribed a low dose, like 0.25mg or 1mg, which isn’t commercially available. So we custom-compound it into a capsule with no dyes or unnecessary fillers, making it easier for your body to absorb and safer for daily use.”

Then she asked, “Are there side effects?”

I nodded. “Like any medication, there can be mild side effects—like fuzzy facial hair, swelling, or a faster heartbeat in sensitive patients. But at low doses, most people tolerate it very well. Your doctor will monitor you for any signs of side effects, just in case.”

She smiled, “I had no idea this was even an option. I’m hopeful!”

“Hair loss can be frustrating, but solutions like low-dose oral Minoxidil offer real promise—especially when personalized to your needs,” I said. “And at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we’re here to compound it fresh and ship it to your door.”

Until tomorrow,
