Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a young man came in looking under the weather. His voice was hoarse, and he had that familiar stuffy nose look. He walked up to the counter and said, “I’ve got a cold, and I’ve been feeling awful all day. I saw DayQuil on the shelf—would that help me get through the day without feeling groggy?”
I could see he was hoping for something that wouldn’t knock him out like many cold medications do. “Yes, DayQuil is actually a great choice for daytime cold and flu relief. It’s a combination medication that helps tackle multiple symptoms—congestion, cough, sore throat, headaches, and even minor aches and fever.”
He nodded, but still seemed unsure. “So, how does it work without making me drowsy? Most cold meds knock me out.”
“That’s the great thing about DayQuil,” I explained. “It’s designed to be non-drowsy, so it won’t interfere with your day. It contains three active ingredients: acetaminophen to reduce pain and fever, dextromethorphan to suppress your cough, and phenylephrine to relieve nasal congestion. Together, they work to keep your symptoms at bay without making you sleepy.”
He seemed relieved but had another question. “How long does it last? Do I need to take it more than once a day?”
“DayQuil works for about 4 to 6 hours,” I said. “You’ll probably need to take it every 4 hours to keep your symptoms under control, but make sure not to exceed the recommended dose. The packaging will tell you exactly how many doses are safe to take in a 24-hour period.”
We then talked about some additional tips for getting over a cold faster. “Make sure you’re staying hydrated, getting plenty of rest, and eating nutritious foods to help your body fight off the infection. And if your symptoms last more than 10 days or get worse, it’s a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider.”
Before he left, I added, “And remember, if you need more DayQuil or anything else, we offer free delivery here at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, so you don’t have to leave home when you’re feeling sick. Plus, if you ever need a more personalized medication, we offer compounding services to create custom treatments just for you.”
He smiled and said, “That’s perfect! I’ll give DayQuil a try. Thanks for the advice!”
It’s moments like these that make me grateful to provide patients with relief that fits their needs, especially when they’re not feeling their best. At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we’re here to support our community with options like free delivery and custom compounding to ensure everyone gets the care they deserve.
Until tomorrow,
