Hello Diary,

Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I had an interaction that reminded me why I love being a pharmacist and the impact we can have on our patients’ health, even with something as simple as over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

It was mid-afternoon, and as usual, the pharmacy was buzzing with activity. People were coming in to pick up prescriptions, chat about their health concerns, and grab everyday essentials. Amidst the activity, I noticed a woman standing by the digestive health section, scanning the shelves, looking a bit overwhelmed. I could see the uncertainty in her eyes, so I made my way over to see if I could help.

“Hi there! Is there something I can help you find?” I asked with a smile.

She looked relieved that I approached her. “Oh, yes, please! I’ve been having heartburn lately, and I’m not sure which product to choose. There are so many options here. I’ve heard of Tums, but I’m not sure if it’s the right choice for me.”

We had a quick chat about her symptoms. She mentioned that she had been experiencing frequent heartburn after meals, especially when she ate spicy or acidic foods. It was clear that she was looking for some relief, but she wasn’t sure where to start.

“Tums is definitely a great option for occasional heartburn,” I explained. “It works quickly to neutralize stomach acid and provides relief in just a few minutes. It’s a calcium-based antacid, so it’s safe to use, and it even provides a little extra calcium boost. However, if you’re having heartburn more frequently, there are other options you might want to consider.”

I went on to explain the difference between fast-acting antacids like Tums and longer-lasting solutions like Pepcid or Prilosec OTC, which help reduce stomach acid over a longer period.

“Since you’re experiencing heartburn regularly,” I suggested, “Tums could be your go-to for immediate relief, but you might want to look into a daily heartburn prevention product like Pepcid, which you can take before meals if you know you’ll be eating something that could trigger your symptoms.”

She nodded thoughtfully. “That makes sense. Sometimes, I just want something quick, but other times, it’s more predictable. Do I need to be concerned about any side effects?”

I reassured her that while Tums is generally safe when used as directed, overuse can sometimes cause constipation or, less commonly, diarrhea. I also made sure she knew that if her heartburn persisted or got worse, it would be important to see a doctor.

Before she made her final decision, I gave her a quick rundown on some lifestyle tips to manage heartburn naturally: avoiding large meals, steering clear of trigger foods (like citrus, tomatoes, and coffee), and trying not to lie down immediately after eating.

She thanked me with a smile. “I feel so much better about what to do now. I’ll start with Tums for now and see how it goes, and if it keeps happening, I’ll try something like Pepcid.”

As she walked to the checkout with a bottle of Tums in hand, I felt a wave of satisfaction. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love my work. Being able to help people make informed decisions about their health, even for something as common as heartburn, makes all the difference.

For me, every day is an opportunity to educate, guide, and make someone’s life a little bit easier. It’s why I became a pharmacist in the first place—and why I can’t imagine doing anything else.

This was just one moment in my day, but it left a lasting impression. I love that I can be a source of trusted information for my patients, whether they’re looking for help with a prescription or something as simple as picking the right over-the-counter medication.

Until tomorrow, Rania – Your Friendly Pharmacist at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy
