This morning, a frazzled-looking young professional rushed into Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, practically sighing as she reached the counter. “Rania,” she said, her voice tight, “I feel constantly on edge. My heart races, I can’t sleep, and I’m snapping at everyone. My friend said it’s probably just stress, but it feels like more. What’s actually happening in my body?”

I nodded understandingly. “You’re right, chronic stress isn’t just a feeling; it triggers a cascade of hormonal responses in your body, starting with your brain’s ‘fight-or-flight’ system.”

She frowned. “Fight-or-flight? Isn’t that for emergencies?”

“Exactly!” I explained. “It’s an ancient survival mechanism. When your brain perceives a threat – whether it’s a looming work deadline or a real danger – it activates the sympathetic nervous system. This leads to the release of hormones like adrenaline and norepinephrine.”

“Adrenaline… that’s what makes your heart pound, right?”

“That’s right,” I confirmed. “Adrenaline increases your heart rate, raises your blood pressure, and boosts your energy by releasing glucose from your body’s stores. Norepinephrine also sharpens your focus and heightens your senses.”

“Okay, that makes sense for a quick burst of energy. But why do I feel this way all the time?” she asked, rubbing her temples.

“When stress becomes chronic, your brain continues to signal the need for this response,” I said. “Another key player is the hypothalamus, which releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). CRH then signals the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH travels to your adrenal glands, which then release cortisol.”

Her eyes widened. “Cortisol… I’ve heard that’s the ‘stress hormone.’”

“That’s correct,” I said. “Cortisol has many important functions, including regulating blood sugar, reducing inflammation, and helping your body respond to stress. In the short term, it’s beneficial. However, when cortisol levels remain elevated for prolonged periods due to chronic stress, it can have negative effects on your health.”

“Like what?” she asked, looking concerned.

“Long-term elevated cortisol can contribute to things like weight gain (especially around the abdomen), sleep disturbances, weakened immune function, digestive issues, anxiety, depression, and even memory problems,” I explained.

“So this constant stress is actually changing my hormones?”

“Precisely,” I affirmed. “And it’s a feedback loop. Stress triggers hormone release, and prolonged hormonal imbalances can actually make you more susceptible to stress.”

“This is overwhelming,” she admitted. “What can I do?”

“The first step is recognizing the impact of stress on your body,” I reassured her. “Then, it’s about implementing stress management techniques. This can include things like regular exercise, mindfulness practices, getting enough sleep, and maintaining a healthy diet. Sometimes, targeted support can also be helpful.”

“Like what kind of support?”

“Depending on your individual situation and after consulting with your doctor, there might be options to support your body’s stress response,” I said. “For example, we sometimes compound supplements that can help support adrenal function or balance cortisol levels, always under the guidance of a healthcare provider. We believe in a holistic approach to wellness here at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy in Riverside, addressing both the symptoms and the underlying factors contributing to stress.”

She took a deep breath, looking a little less overwhelmed. “Thank you, Rania. This gives me a better understanding of what’s going on.”

“You’re welcome,” I said. “Remember, you don’t have to navigate this alone. We’re here to help you find strategies to manage stress and support your overall well-being.”

It’s important to empower patients with knowledge about how their bodies respond to stress and to offer support in finding healthy coping mechanisms.

Until tomorrow,

Rania – Your Friendly Pharmacist at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy
