Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I received a call from a patient who had just picked up her prescription.
“Rania, my doctor put me on low-dose naltrexone (LDN) for my autoimmune condition. I thought naltrexone was for addiction treatment—why this?”
I smiled. “That’s actually a very common question. In higher doses, naltrexone is used for opioid and alcohol dependence. But at low doses (typically 1.5 mg to 4.5 mg), it has a completely different effect. It’s believed to help modulate the immune system and reduce chronic inflammation by blocking opioid receptors for a short period, which triggers the body to release more endorphins—natural chemicals that reduce pain and enhance immune function.”
She asked, “So it’s safe long-term?”
“Yes, it’s actually very well tolerated for most people,” I said. “Common uses include fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and other autoimmune conditions.”
She wanted to know how long it would take to see results.
“Most patients start noticing improvements in a few weeks to a few months, depending on their condition,” I explained. “But it’s important to stay consistent and work with your provider to adjust the dose as needed.”
Before we ended the call, I reminded her, “LDN is one of those medications where patience really pays off. It can have incredible benefits for some people.”
She said, “Thanks for explaining. I’m hopeful this will finally help me.”
At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we love being the place where innovative therapies meet personalized care—because every patient’s journey is different.
Until tomorrow,
