Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I spoke with a patient who had been prescribed compounded testosterone capsules, and she had an important question:
“I’m allergic to some of the inactive ingredients in commercial testosterone medications. Can this be made without allergens?”
“Yes, absolutely,” I assured her. “That’s one of the greatest advantages of compounded medications—we can customize the formula to exclude specific fillers or dyes that may trigger allergies.”
She was relieved. “So you can make it completely clean?”
“Exactly,” I said. “For your testosterone capsule, we can use hypoallergenic fillers, such as rice flour or cellulose, depending on your needs. The active ingredient—testosterone—remains the same, but we control everything else in the capsule.”
We also discussed her dosage. “Your provider prescribed 5 mg capsules to be taken daily, and we’ll ensure consistent potency and freshness.”
She asked about safety, especially given her hormone sensitivity. I explained, “We prepare it following strict guidelines, and with the launch of our new hazardous compounding lab, we’ll be even more equipped to handle hormone therapy with increased precision and safety.”
Before she left, she smiled and said, “I didn’t know this was possible. Thank you for offering a solution that fits my needs.”
Meeting patients where they are—especially when they have complex needs like allergies—is exactly why compounding exists.
Until tomorrow,
