This morning at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, a provider called with a special request:
“Hi Rania, I have a patient who needs compounded progesterone—but she has a severe peanut allergy. Can we avoid peanut oil?”

I said, “Absolutely. Many commercial progesterone capsules and creams use peanut oil as the base, but in compounding, we can use alternative bases like olive oil, rice bran oil, or micronized progesterone in powder-filled capsules.”

She sounded relieved. “She’s been hesitant to start any hormone therapy because of her allergy.”

I reassured her, “You’re doing the right thing by checking. We always screen our formulations for allergens and can clearly label and document every ingredient we use. Our compounded progesterone will be peanut-free, and we’ll also use a vegetarian capsule shell—just in case she’s sensitive to gelatin too.”

Later, the patient herself called to ask, “So this is the same as regular progesterone?”

“Yes,” I explained. “It’s still micronized progesterone, which is bioidentical and commonly used for hormone replacement. The only difference is the carrier oil and capsule base. We compound it from scratch so you know exactly what’s in it—and what’s not.”

She asked, “How long does it take to get it?”

“We usually prepare it in 1 to 2 days,” I said, “and we can ship it to your door. Plus, once our new hazardous compounding lab is completed, we’ll be expanding even more hormone options for sensitive patients like you.”

She was grateful. “I wish more places paid attention to this.”
