Today at Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, I received a call from a dermatologist who was interested in compounding Finasteride into a topical solution for a male patient suffering from androgenic alopecia.

He asked, “Rania, I’ve been using oral Finasteride for hair loss, but the patient is experiencing some side effects. Would it be possible to compound Finasteride into a topical form for him instead?”

I replied, “Absolutely. We can compound Finasteride topical solution specifically for hair loss treatment. In fact, many patients find topical formulations to be effective with fewer systemic side effects, especially when compared to oral medications. It works by directly targeting the scalp, where the DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is most active, helping to reduce hair loss and even stimulate hair regrowth.”

He asked, “What’s the typical concentration, and how should it be applied?”

“We usually compound Finasteride 0.25% to 1% topical solution for hair loss, depending on the patient’s needs. The patient should apply the solution once daily to the scalp, ideally before bedtime. It should be applied to the dry scalp to ensure better absorption, and like any topical treatment, the key is consistency for visible results.”

He sounded reassured and asked about the timeframe. “How long will it take to see results?”

“Patients usually start noticing some improvement after 3 to 6 months, but of course, it varies. I recommend tracking progress regularly so you can adjust the dose or treatment plan accordingly,” I explained.

Before hanging up, he said, “That sounds perfect. I’ll send the prescription over for compounding.”

At Doctor’s Choice Pharmacy, we love being able to offer custom treatments like Finasteride topical solution that are both effective and tailored to each patient’s needs. We’re always here to help patients get the best care possible.

Until tomorrow,
